Coinfections in COVID-19

Viral Co-infections

Two interesting things that have cropped up via twitter.

  1. Viral panel screening of COVID-19 patients out in JAMA

Relatively small and viral focused panel ( influenza A/B, respiratory syncytial virus, non–SARS-CoV-2 Coronaviridae, adenovirus, parainfluenza 1-4, human metapneumovirus, rhinovirus/enterovirus, Chlamydia pneumoniae , Mycoplasma pneumoniae) but in a good number of individuals in California (1206). 20% have co-infection. No stratification by severity or outcome.

  1. Herpesvirus reactivation

Monitored by some hospitals in the UK (Papworth the example) reactivation of viruses in ITU can occur and is associated with pneumonitis in some. See this from Charlotte Houldcroft https://twitter.com/DrCJ_Houldcroft/status/1253974664155725829
